Adi Shankaracharya's Visit
- Śrī Sukrālā Devī Mandira is situated 10 kilometres from Billawar in the Kathua district of Jammu, at an elevation of 3,500 feet on a hillock set within dense chir-pine forest. The presiding deity manifests as a Śilā — a sacred stone slab — seated upon a brass lion with a silver-mounted head; behind the primary image stands a depiction of Mahiṣāsuramardini, the four-armed, sword-bearing fierce form of Durgā triumphing over the demon king Mahiṣāsura, with eyes fashioned of silver inlaid with dark vermilion.
- The living tradition of the shrine, however, preserves a deeper sacred stratigraphy: the presiding Śilā is identified as a Piṇḍī rūpa of Caṇḍikā Devī — an aniconic, self-manifest form of the Devī predating the constructed shrine — and at the rear of the sanctum stands a second, older vigraha of composite Śākta identity, housing Kālī, Sarasvatī, and Lakṣmī together, held by the temple tradition and shastras to have received direct anugraha from Ādi Śaṅkarācārya himself.
- Concealed within the rear precinct is further a Yantric installation — a Yantra blessed by Adi Śaṅkarācārya and embedded within a Śāligrāma Śilā, preserved in the hidden recesses of the shrine in unbroken tradition.
- At the rear of the temple complex, set into stone, are two Pādukās accompanied by a Triśūla — identified by the shrine's living tradition as the Pādukās of Ādi Śaṅkarācārya himself, marking his physical presence at this site and constituting, alongside the anugraha-vigraha and the Śāligrāma Yantra, a three-fold Śaṅkara footprint of exceptional density within a single sacred precinct.
The above findings are based on local recitations and living traditions, as well as inscriptions and markers observed at the site, supported by available historical references, certain scientific observations, and guidance from the Shastras. As our understanding continues to evolve, we will update this account from time to time as additional insights and information emerge from local communities and further study.
